Our Society was formed in 1928 under the name of 'The Tasmanian Cambrian Society', as it was the only Welsh Society in Tasmania at that time. As Launceston also now has a Welsh Society the name has been changed to 'The Welsh Society of Southern Tasmania' as our members come from the Hobart area. Our current membership is about 40 people. We enjoy many social get-togethers throughout the year, such as BBQs at members homes either to celebrate a special event, or simply to keep in touch.

Blackstone Ipswich Cambrian Choir

Details about the activities of a Choir founded by the Welsh settlers in Blackstone in 1886, and nurtured by Lewis Thomas from Tal y Bont near Aberythwyth -- Thomas was 'the Coal King' of Ipswich. The Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir still sings in Welsh as well as English, and in five other languages as well. It has a close relationship with the United Welsh Church, also founded by Lewis Thomas, in this little piece of Hen Wlad 'down under'.

The Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir was formed in 1980 by a few enthusiastic members of the Vancouver Welsh Society. The choir has grown from eighteen to over one hundred singers and now has men of varied national and ethnic backgrounds. The nationalities represented are Welsh (of course), English, Scottish, Irish, German, Dutch, Chinese, Polish, First Nations - all of whom count themselves as Canadian.
