The Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir was formed in 1980 by a few enthusiastic members of the Vancouver Welsh Society. The choir has grown from eighteen to over one hundred singers and now has men of varied national and ethnic backgrounds. Oslo Welsh Society - Cymdeithas Cymry Oslo - was founded in 1983 by a group of expatriates led by long-standing chairman Lynn Edwards, and was intended first and foremost as a 'home from home' for Welsh people living in Norway. The Society's constitution more formally states that the Society shall be both an instigator of and a focal point for Welsh activities in Norway. The roots of Côr Meibion Cymraeg stretch back in history to when in the mid 1850's, a large group of Welsh Quarrymen, who had been on the work force of the Menai Suspension Bridge, came to Montreal after its completion. A contract had been given to start work on the construction of the Victoria Bridge to span the St. Lawrence River. Our Society was formed in 1928 under the name of 'The Tasmanian Cambrian Society', as it was the only Welsh Society in Tasmania at that time. As Launceston also now has a Welsh Society the name has been changed to 'The Welsh Society of Southern Tasmania' as our members come from the Hobart area. Our current membership is about 40 people.
