The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow gauge line using steam locomotives on all advertised passenger trains. It was opened in 1865 and runs inland from Tywyn on the Mid Wales Coast to Nant Gwernol. The narrow-gauge Corris Railway ran from 1859 to 1948. Since 1966 the Society has worked to ensure that the railway would no longer be just a memory. In 1970 the Corris Railway Museum was opened, and in 2002 passenger services recommenced on the first section of rebuilt line. The Society also researches the history of the railway and district. Located at the Tywyn Wharf terminus of the Talyllyn Railway, the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is an important collection of artefacts relating to Narrow Gauge Railways in the British Isles, throughout a period spanning some 200 years. The collection ranges from complete locomotives to smaller pieces such as paperwork, signalling equipment and tickets.
